INTENT

We believe that all children at Redwood should have the opportunity to develop their creative flair and have the opportunity to become innovative designers who can confidently evaluate their own work. We believe is it vital that children have access to a wide range of materials and resources that can allow them to experiment with design, technique and innovation.  We firmly believe a high-quality design and technology education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. The problem solving and critical thinking skills acquired through design technology lessons, will be reflected across the whole school curriculum. We also teach how technology and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

IMPLEMENTATION

Throughout the school, we will give children access to well-balanced design and technology lessons which include a mixture of theory and design, hands on building and critical evaluation of design and end product. We will facilitate opportunities to use a wide range of resources to create 3D models, experiment with different textiles, ingredients and flavours to work as part of a team to resolve different problems. Children will have the opportunity to meet people working in different sectors across the community in order to broaden their career aspirations including local industry leaders such as AMRC. They will also work closely with secondary colleagues as part of the transition programme. 

IMPACT

Using our curriculum, we want more of our children to strive to independently seek out opportunities within the technological community, including career opportunities such as engineers, designers, chefs, scientists and mathematicians. Our design technology curriculum will ensure than all children are provided with good quality opportunities to achieve these ambitious goals. We want our children to apply their skills into the wider community and their future careers.
