GEOGRAPHY
INTENT
Our Geography curriculum is designed to develop children‛s curiosity about the world, encouraging children to recognise the importance of understanding the world around them. We aim to provide the children with the skills and knowledge to think like geographers, studying a range of places, using mapping skills and conducting fieldwork to help develop their knowledge and understanding of the Earth‛s physical and human features. We will also develop the children‛s ability to apply geographical skills to enable them to confidently communicate their findings and geographical understanding to a range of audiences.
We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about their local area and make links with their community. We also encourage children to study unfamiliar places further afield to broaden their knowledge of not only the United Kingdom but also other countries around the world.
IMPLEMENTATION
High quality teaching is carefully planned and sequenced to ensure that prior knowledge, skills and vocabulary are built upon. Teachers use progression documents to ensure that subject matter is presented clearly and that misconceptions are identified and addressed to ensure that new knowledge is revisited and retained. A love of geography learning is promoted through practical fieldwork opportunities, organised visits / visitors and workshop opportunities.
Where appropriate, cross- curricular links are made to support learning outcomes and the children’s retention and application of knowledge and skills. Teachers provide opportunities for independent research, collaboration and debate to ensure that children are able to transfer their skills across subject domains.
IMPACT
Our Geography Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. Our children will leave with a vast knowledge of their local environment along with a deeper understanding of the world they live in.
