INTENT

At Redwood we recognise the challenges our children face on a daily basis. In order to equip them with the tools they need to be successful beyond the school gates, we have created the Maltby Citizens offer. This approach acts as a ‘golden thread’ throughout our curriculum and is designed to prepare them to be global citizens, now and in their future lives. Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos. British Values are promoted through the overarching aims and objectives of PSHE by supporting our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in modern Britain. From September 2020, primary schools have a duty to provide Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) into the curriculum and we have incorporated this into our Maltby Citizens offer.

Our intent is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know more, remember more and understand more. At Redwood, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

IMPLEMENTATION

As part of the Maltby Citizens offer, we have opted to follow the RoSis Scheme of work for PHSE/RSHE, in conjunction with resources such as Picture News, BBC Newsround, Money Matters and Primary Allstars.

Although the spiral curriculum starts in Year 1 and follows the children through to Year 6. Citizenship is also taught through the wider curriculum offer in our Nursery and Reception provision. The distribution of the lessons complements key campaigns throughout the year such as Anti-bullying Week and a Maltby Citizens calendar has been produced.  

We encourage opportunities for discussion and debate. Open learning activities provide an opportunity for pupils to develop their skills, knowledge and attitude. We firmly believe children debating or discussing topics that are current and relevant to them, helps practise using specific language whilst talking about feelings can help them develop key skills for the future.

• Children will demonstrate and apply the British Values of Democracy, Tolerance, Mutual respect, Rule of law and Liberty.

• Children will demonstrate a healthy outlook towards school, a pride in their academy and its vision and values – attendance will be in-line with national averages and behaviour will be good.

• Children will achieve age related expectations across the wider curriculum.

• Children will become healthy and responsible members of society

• Children will be on their journey preparing them for life and work in modern Britain.
