PHYSICAL EDUCATION

INTENT

PE at Maltby Redwood aims to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing in our children now and for their future. Physical fitness is an important part of understanding the benefits of improving lifelong health and increasing the absence of disease. It also encourages the need to lead a healthier lifestyle through exercise and food choices.

It teaches self-discipline and that to be successful, you must work hard, show resilience and have the determination to believe that anything can be achieved. We deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to improve their skills and apply them to a game situation. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

IMPLEMENTATION

High quality PE lessons are delivered twice a week to ensure children at Maltby Redwood are offered a minimum of 2 hours of PE per week. One session is led by a specialist PE teacher and the other followed up by class teachers. Working with the specialist PE teacher enhances the provision on offer and provides teachers with quality PLD opportunities. Teachers use the PE progression document to ensure that learning is planned and sequenced effectively, and that prior knowledge, skills and vocabulary are built upon.

A love of physical activity and sport is promoted through the wide-ranging activities on offer: dance, games, athletics, gymnastics, swimming and adventurous activities. Teachers layer skills and knowledge to allow pupils to gain confidence and refine performance through self-reflection and peer feedback.

At Maltby Redwood we provide opportunities for inter and intra school competitions, which are centred around inclusion, sportsmanship and developing resilience, ensuring that children learn the values required to become well-rounded citizens. Organised sporting events and clubs ensure that children can share activities with family and the wider community, providing opportunities for children to practise skills and understanding within a ‘real-life’ context.

IMPACT

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Maltby Redwood, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of your own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise their solid foundation of skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.

We give all children the opportunity to play sport competitively with other schools from the local community. This provides children with a wider outlook of life and opportunities to see how other children conduct themselves from other walks of life. It also demonstrates to children that further doors will open in life and that they have the opportunity to access these new horizons.

By the end of year 6, all children will have had swimming and basic water safety and life-saving lessons which are invaluable skills for life. The impact of this is that all children can be confident and safe around bodies of water.
