Exceptional School Closures

I thought it would be useful to remind parents of our policy regarding inclement weather.  I want to assure you that we will continue to do everything in our power to ensure that Maltby Redwood Academy remains open and that learning is not disrupted.

During the winter months it is important that you are aware that school closure will only be considered if the condition of the site poses a health and safety risk to students and staff or road conditions are deemed to be too hazardous for travel to and from school.

In the unlikely event that the Academy has to be closed, the decision will be taken on a day to day basis. Information will be published on the school website and twitter site by 7.30am and a text message will be sent to all parents. (Please ensure that we have your correct mobile number). Wherever possible the Academy will make an announcement on Radio Sheffield and/or Hallam confirming our decision to close the school. I must emphasise again that the school will only be closed in exceptional circumstances.

Please note that on a day of snow or ice there will be no changes to the school uniform policy. However, it makes sense for children to wrap up warm, but again, when they are in school, the full uniform should be worn correctly. If children wear different footwear for the journey to school, every effort should be made to change into school shoes on arrival.

If the snow fall is particularly heavy during the day the Academy may decide to close early and send students home before 3.15pm. However, any decision about sending children home will be posted on the website and again confirmed by text message.

I appreciate that the vast majority of children enjoy snow and behave sensibly in and around the site. Unfortunately there have been a few examples in the past of behaviour which will not be tolerated. Our main concern is always around ‘snowballing’ on the school site which can result in damage to property or more importantly, injury to a young person. Please note that we consider snowballing in this manner to be serious and will be punished according to behaviour policy. We hope you recognise that this is designed to protect the vast majority of our children.
